VISIBLE THINKING TECHNIQUES

Visible Thinking is a broad and flexible framework for enriching classroom learning in the content areas and fostering students' intellectual development at the same time. It focuses on developing students' thinking dispositions in truth seeking, understanding, fairness and imagination (source).

Some visible thinking core routines to get started:

  • What Makes You Say That? Interpretation with justification routine

  • What’s going on?

  • What do you see that makes you say that?

  • Think, Puzzle, Explore - A routine that sets the stage for deeper inquiry

  • What do you think you know about this topic?

  • What questions or puzzles do you have?

  • How can you explore this topic?

  • Think, Pair, Share - A routine for active reasoning and explanation

  • Pose a question to students, ask them to take a few minutes of thinking time and then to share their thoughts.

  • I Used to Think... Now I think... - A routine for reflecting on how and why our thinking has changed

  • See, Think, Wonder - A routine for exploring works of art and other interesting things

  • What do you see?

  • What do you think about that?

  • What does it make you wonder?
